Experiences of being a Carer at Acquire Care

Wondering what it would be like to be a carer? Here is a mother of two, Hannah’s, experiences on working as a carer for Acquire Care.

Helping people has always come naturally to Hannah, she will go out of her way to assist and help people. Therefore, when the possibility of being a carer and helping people for a career first arose, Hannah didn’t think twice and decided to have a go.

After being interviewed and accepted for training by Acquire Care, she successfully supplied references and underwent the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) and Disclosure Barring Services checks as insisted by the Care Quality Commission. Training was completed at Acquire Care’s office by their in house trainers. Hannah found the training course to be fun but thorough. Areas covered included Moving and Handling, Health and Safety, Food Hygiene and Medication.

After the training course was completed satisfactorily, the next stage was to shadow a carer or a team of carers before being confident to go to visit Clients on her own. At all stages of the training, Hannah appreciated the support that was given to her by the team at Acquire Care.

It is Acquire Care’s aim is to send the same carer to each Client to ensure that continuity of care is provided. This meant that Hannah soon began to know her Clients. She learnt what they liked, their hobbies and how to get a smile from them if they were down. By seeing the Clients on a regular basis, it was possible for them to engage with Hannah and she enjoyed the companionship as did they. Hannah found the stories that they told about their lives quite fascinating.

With hourly care, different care plans are written for each individual Client so Hannah has found the work each day to be varied and interesting, especially as several clients are visited each working shift. By helping people who need care, Hannah has found her ideal job. She thoroughly enjoys helping to make someone’s day better and hopes to continue with her training to improve her career prospects. By helping someone to have a more enjoyable life, to see their health improve and know that she has made a difference means such a great deal to Hannah. In her own words “I didn’t realise that being a carer would be so rewarding. I always thought that to look after someone would be difficult but all you need is to have a smile, be friendly and talk. People appreciate all that I do for them”.
